For a moment there, he had actually kind of believed Bodhi, because he wanted to believe Bodhi, because she’d taken his breath away in that black dress with that smile and it felt natural and it felt right, and —

The look on her face when he’d complimented her, a deer-in-headlights discomfort and a change of subject; the way she’d gone pale when he’d suggested that he might have been jealous; the way she drained the wine to avoid Bodhi’s comments... He had made her so uncomfortable, and he’d gone too far, and…

He kept replaying that kiss in his mind — she had responded, and positively, and for a few short seconds, he’d forgotten how tense she’d been all night, how withdrawn, and he’d thought, stupidly, that maybe Bodhi was right after all, maybe she was nervous because she was interested, because she’d kissed him like she meant it, like it was real, and…

And then he’d thought: half her family is out here, she couldn’t stop me if she wanted to.
