danbi has no idea what she’s doing. all her parents told her was that she would be meeting a family friend, they were running late, and she was supposed to treat him with absolute cordiality while waiting for them to arrive. so she listens, and does exactly that. she’s been nothing but courteous to the well-groomed gentleman sitting across the table all night, until the words “blind date” spill out of his mouth.
danbi pauses as she processes the situation. what the heck does he mean when he says “so glad you agreed to go on this blind date with me”? she sure as hell did not agree to any blind dates, and he’s supposed to be a family friend. that’s when it hits her— family friend. an internal groan echoes through her head as she realises that her parents have managed to trap her in a set-up. they’re not running late. they’re just not coming, and this is another one of those blind dates they like to orchestrate for her. seriously, it’s not even like she’s a forty-year-old spinster left on the shelf. now she’s stuck in this restaurant with a stranger her parents want her to date (and possibly marry), and although she briefly considers storming out of this place like they do in dramas, she quickly discards the thought. there’s no way out of this other than to sit through it and fake a smile for the rest of the night, or she would be embarrassing her family. the thought of this infuriates her, and she chugs down her glass of wine resentfully.
after too many glasses of wine that have disappeared way too quickly for danbi’s liking, she finds that her company seems to have gotten a lot more tolerable. he must be really humorous, or she wouldn’t have been giggling at everything he’s said for the past hour. right now, it feels as though “i have a dog named cookie” is the funniest thing she’s heard all year. maybe it’s the way he said it, or the expressions he makes when he speaks. danbi squints her eyes as the male’s facial features begin to warp together, and she bursts into yet another fit of giggles. that’s when she realises something is not quite right.
uh-oh, she thinks. uncontrollable laughter, check. that’s the first sign of intoxication. distorted vision, check. and there goes the second. heck, even in this state, danbi knows it’s time to retreat before she makes a further mess at this scene. her parents would not be happy if they find out that their precious daughter spent the blind date they painstakingly set up making a fool of herself. as much of an annoyance this entire situation is, the last thing danbi wants to do is upset her parents. she can’t sully the jeon family’s good name either, what would people think if they heard that danbi was an inebriated mess while meeting a marriage prospect for the first time?
she holds up a hand to stop her date mid-sentence, and blurts out “pee!” before stumbling her way to the toilet. she barely manages to shut the doors before she plops herself down on the toilet seat. cursing under her breath, danbi hurriedly rummages through her bag for her phone, and dials her personal helpline. it’s a good thing she’s got this number saved on speed dial. when her call goes through, danbi manages to say, “jammi help me! i’m at restaurant... kim’s!” well, at least she got her message across, even if her words were all jumbled up.
