When I first saw pictures of the Dreamy Camera Cafe (꿈꾸는사진기) (Facebook), I knew I had to go. Yes, it’s a 5+ hour train/subway/taxi trip from Busan, but I really wanted to see it in person.
On the outside, it’s a two-story cafe resembling a vintage German Rolleiflex film camera next to a one-story house, in the middle of a no-where. You might think of it as just another gimmicky Asian coffee shop. But it’s not. It’s a combined dream of a small family that will encourage you to live your dreams.
If you take the time to write down five dreams to pursue, one of the family members will take a small polaroid picture of it for you to take with you, and then they’ll keep your written goals in the cafe, on the wall or in an album. It’s such a sweet concept and the family seems genuinely kind. I wish them lots of success.
When visiting, it’s really easy to see that people all over the world love this place and the owners really love it too.
To give you an idea of their personalities, here’s a letter they shared when they recently changed their hours to be closed every Sunday and Monday:
Korea and soju; the two are pretty intertwined. My dad likes to tell the story about how he once had a bad bottle of soju in South Korea. When I asked him why he thought that particular bottle was “bad,” he replied, “It was my third bottle in a row and it just tasted off. It made me sick.” Yeah, probably not the fact that it was his third bottle, right? Ha.
In 2014, Jinro soju was the largest selling alcohol in the world with sales of 71 million cases world wide. In 2015, they really brought the ruckus though with flavored soju.
Yes, we’ve been flavoring it ourselves by mixing it with soda or juice, but last year was the first year that we could buy pre-bottled flavored soju in the store. And, it’s addictively good. I don’t like “blue” (blueberry?) or “red” (pomegranate?) -but I’m all about the flavors grapefruit, peach, or pineapple. It’s drinkable on its own but it’s especially refreshing mixed with Sprite (or Korean Cider).
I just can’t believe that soju has been around since the 1300s but it took until the year 2015 to sell flavored soju. 2015! Unbelievable.
Lately, I’ve been seeing black eggs (aka charcoal eggs) pretty frequently in the market. They’ve always been around but they seem more popular lately. It seems like they’re just hard boiled eggs with charcoal coating. When I asked the lady at the market about them, she said they’re moister than other smoked eggs (which are really popular in Korea, especially in spas and saunas). It’s supposedly a healthy snack, but I still haven’t tried them because the color is off-putting. Has anyone tried them?
No idea what copyright laws are like in Korea, but I see a lot of what I deem infringement here in Korea. Whether it be a copied business name, musical act, or celebrity... Something seems off --but many times, hilarious. Have you seen anything similar lately?
I went to the aquarium today. Just kidding, I'm in the subway. #OhKorea
Capture the moment?
I just finished taking pictures/having a late lunch with my CT and her family. I thought the room was going to be much bigger but it was really compact. I thought there was going to be a lot of room to work with but I guess not. I don’t know if I’m satisfied with the pictures I took but I did try my best. My CT saw some and she said she likes them but I feel iffy about them. Hopefully once edited, it will be somewhat decent. Everyone has different expectations and I’m just afraid it’s not up to par with my CT’S expectations. Perhaps I’m just being too critical. She offered to pay me but I told her I’ll just take it for free (besides I personally think it’s not good enough). I guess I’ll just have to work with the pictures I took. I was taking pictures but my CT’S family was insisting me to stop and enjoy lunch. I tried to do both (take pictures and eat) since I feel obligated to take some candid shots and capture the moment. In addition, an awkward but brief conversation started about considering my CT’S older sister as a possibility. Talk about awkwardness.
