If there is one thing you can always count on, it's Deftones to put out some bangers. It’s no secret my favourite album and era is and probably always will be Diamond Eyes, I just think it is one of the best albums that has ever been created. They got together back in 1988 and now their record collection is up to 9 full length studio releases. All else I have to say is that they are one of the best experimental, progressive alternative bands to ever grace the earth, RIP Chi and lets see what we’ve got here!
I can see “Ceremony” going down extremely well in the middle of a set, if I was to go back to those times I’ve caught them before I imagine it would be to much delight with flow of dreamlike states and fine line of it's temperment between giving someone the boot and picking them up when they’re down, there has always been something about Moreno’s vocals that’s just manage to soothe you but also light a fire under your ass at the drop of a hat. The real magic for me when journeying through the album was when I hit “The Spell of Mathematics” and this was like a psychedelic high through time and space, like a more positive spin on the twilight zone, it really captivated me when I was on my nightly walk. “This Link is Dead” has a huge old school Deftones vibe, chinos vocals go back to the likes of White Pony, very angry and sharp with huge range, the music that accompanies this is just a thing of absolute technical progressive obscure beauty. I love “Pompeii'' the lyrics are catchy, it’s chunky, stop start tempo, amazing but I really am not a fan of the long interlude even though I know it’s a build to the next track, I just skip it when it hits that point. “Genesis” takes me back to Nottingham Rock City and Download when I saw them live, just the ambiance, changeable nature, obscure distorted softness that can just switch unexpectedly to thick and chunky riffs and blasts.
I never had any doubt that I’d be fully into this release, one of my top tier rated bands and as of yet they have not let me down. I take any good thing from the trainwreck that was 2020 and cling to it for dear life, thank you guys for a little bit of light and a little bit of hope.
