hello, do you mind if i ask what the problems are with y/oi? i've been enjoying it for the lgbt rep but i don't want to unknowingly support something Problematic u know
It’s… just not LGBTQ+ rep. I don’t care how many ~moments~ there are. They aren’t canon. I don’t mean to be MEAN about it, but they aren’t canon. The “kiss” was literally a hug at most lmao. People can ~interpret~ the moments and be like OMG THEY’RE TOTALLY CANON, but they have NEVER addressed/talked about their relationship that would suggest that they’re remotely together.
Additionally, even if the kiss DID happen and even if they WERE CANON, this show has FAILED to address the fact that… Japan and figure skating in general are rather homophobic. I’m not gonna go Too Much into it because this post deals with it better than I ever could (both the original post and the post attached to it). Keep in mind though that both of these bloggers are not Japanese, though, but since well I am at the least East Asian and a fan of figure skating, I will say that these posts at the very least bring up important points. http://wmap.starfleet.info/post/153335709348/japan-and-lgbt-representation
[I’ll just point out that Asia in general is rather homophobic. Though like not to generalize every Asian country lol. But like in at least East Asia, yeah. It’s a problem. Just keep this in mind… Taiwan is the FIRST Asian country set to legalize same-sex marriage.]
This problem isn’t just with Y*I, though, as a lot of anime has this kind of fanservice to please girls (especially non-Asian girls) who fetishize Japanese gay men and their relationships. And believe it or not, that’s racist!
Also, I should add, even if this whole situation weren’t remotely queerbaiting and they actually established a relationship… The dude is literally Yuri’s coach. Not only is that a bad idea, but it’s also lowkey inappropriate.
(Also like I can’t believe there’s also lowkey incest lmao but anyways.)
I mean that’s just getting into the LGBTQ+ problems with this lmao. The figure skating part of this is just as messy lol. Though I guess fans of the show are less worried about that, but since I actually watch skating it’s both hilarious and cringe-worthy. The animation is literally terrible, the choreography is mediocre at best, and the music selection makes me wanna rip my hair out. Also… Too many people can do a quad lutz. That shit isn’t easy. Also, this is like my personal taste, there is literally WAY TOO MUCH FOCUS on the jumps and the technical side of skating. Like I understand that that’s kinda how it is in the men’s discipline right now, but it’s still annoying lol. If they wanted to make a show that was remotely interesting, they could’ve focused on literally… any other discipline. BUT THAT’S JUST MY TALKING about my feelings as a figure skating fan.
The biggest thing for me is the fandom, though. The show itself I couldn’t care less about since anime is usually problematic anyways, and that’s just how anime has been like. So I can usually deal with it. BUT THE FANDOM NEEDS TO LITERALLY BURN? I’m so sick of it lol. Basically, there’s this fake surge in caring about skating and skaters, but really people only care if real life skaters mention the show. For example, Evgenia is literally a white Russian girl who is obsessed with popular Asian entertainment. Because of this, she has gained TONS of followers and has TONS of RT’s and likes on her tweets just because she is ~just as obsessed with the show as the fandom is. YET, there is NO actual surge in support of figure skating as a sport LET ALONE ASIAN AND LGBTQ+ SKATERS. Out of the Relevant skaters, there is only one (1) out skater, since being out in the skating world is HARD. So it really bugs me how ~simple~ and ~easy~ being out is made to be in the show as expressed in the previous post I linked. (If… people really believe they’re canon. Which they’re not.)
OK this is long and I’m just honestly so tired because I’ve been going @ this discourse for almost 24 hours now and I just have SO many feelings about this and non-Asians consuming Asian media in general that I’m just tired.
I don’t mean to be rude lol but like, this is exhausting. Also, there are probably points that I’ve missed, but I’m just like too angry to type out anything coherent at all.
Also, I am East Asian but not Japanese, so if anybody who is Japanese has anything else to add, please do.
