The hallways are empty when you leave the canteen, silent except for the distant vibrations of the engines. They’re always there, buzzing through the walls of the ship and rumbling through the inclined walkways of the deck. You never liked them as a child, and according to your father, would spend much of your time cowering in bed, curled into yourself, hands clasped over your ears to block out the sound. The noises weren’t particularly loud, the vibrations nowhere near violent, but for a small child who measured like an ant next to the coliseum that was the engine room, every sensation was horrifically amplified.
