Today I Googled ‘Beautiful Black Woman’

But I didn’t get what I expected

Misdirected by images of women unprotected

By even a single layer of clothing

Instead of loathing the fact that

We are defined by our curves

We embrace it

Tap dancing in our stilettos

Reinforcing views of ghettos all around the world

Self-worth twirled around the pole of this romanticized stripper

Young girls now aspire to be

Slowly becoming an expired we

Because there is no ‘us’ anymore

Dragging each other across the floors of dimly lit nightclubs

Fist fighting over a man who sells the right drugs

But has no future

I ask myself, “How did we get here?”
