The river ran swift and inexorable, swallowing the night. A silent moon trembled across its skin, a pale lantern lost in a stream of distant stars. Between two currents — water and sky — a shadow slid, drawn like a moth toward the horizon.
Where the waters will meet and the cold radiance of the heavens turns liquid, the river will spill into a thousand stars. There the shadows wake. There ghostly magnolia buds uncoil along the banks, born of mist and memory; silence will teach them a slow dance of petals.
Step by step, from utter darkness toward the glow. No mirrors, no landmarks, no fulcrum — only the path, only the light, only the summons of the confluence. The pallid luminescence swelled; the contours of living flesh began to heave into being. Step by step...
