OISK will you find a Bob and Elvis party bus.
Remember that weekend that we went on a cat trip instead of studying for finals and still rocked them? #oisk #vetschool #bestfriends #loveher (at Saint Kitts)
When the island reminds you that sometimes you just need to SOTP and smell the roses
Old Things New: Things I Will Miss - OISK
Written August 2, 2014
Fresh Fruit - mangoes, coconuts, starfruit (Carambola), passion fruit, guava, dragonfruit, wax apples, plantains, silk figs, papayas…The island life definitely does not fail to deliver when it comes to the fruit selection!
Ting - This carbonated beverage, likened to Sun Drop or Fresca back home, is grapefruit flavored and delicious! I looked into getting some to serve at our wedding reception, but after seeing the $50USD a case price tag, I decided to enjoy it while I could on the island. I know there are rare gems that serve it in the States, but they are few and far between.
Driving on the Island - anywhere you need to be within 5-20mins. Recognizing 65% of the people you pass on the way to where you need to be - it’s like living in a small town, with underdeveloped roads full of vehicle-destroying potholes from hell. But, if you can get over that, the quick access to most parts of town is quite convenient.
Coconut water - climbing a tree for your own jelly (baby coconut) or having a local climb it for you. Greens, oranges, or yellows (the best) are the different varieties that are available. Even better than the water —> THE JELLY! YUM! (If you don’t know what coconut jelly is…read this and then find a young jelly on the tree so you can try it. Best. Thing. Ever!)
Beach Volleyball Friday - a good workout and good fun. Finding sand in places I didn’t know existed. Sand piling up in the corner of my tile shower. Yup, I’m definitely going to miss knowing where to go every Friday for my weekly wind down.
The Gallery Cafe - homemade bagels with cream cheese topped with freshly caught local wahoo with cayenne and black pepper. Fresh squeezed grapefruit, passion fruit, or orange juice. French pressed coffee with homemade chocolate sauce. Yoga sesh before breakfast in a 200+ year old house in the middle of Independence Square, Basseterre, St. Kitts, West Indies. Yes, please!
The Caribbean Breeze - Living in an apartment with no central AC…the windows open so you can feel the sea blowing you kisses to keep you cool from the hot tropical sun. Smelling the unpolluted, salty, refreshing air every time you step outside.
Volcano Hiking - Four hours total at a brisk walk up a steep incline, filled with green vegetation, brown hanging vines, rocks, boulders, and monkeys chattering in the distance. And then, the breathtaking view at the top - looking down into the crater of a dormant volcano, the wispy clouds rushing up and down the slopes of the crater walls.
Bodyboarding Tropical Storm Surges - So, there was this one time a tropic storm...I think it was Irene...breezed through the island. I remember there being lots of rain, but best of all, lots of SWELLS at the hot spot beach (usually frequented by relaxing sunbathers). We could swim out to the sandbar and easily push off of it to ride the waves in to the beach. It was so much fun! And, it wasn't as dangerous as you may think ;)
The Breathtaking Sunsets, Sunrises, Rainbows, Views! - Okay, so obviously I will miss this the most. Until you have been there and experience the beauty of a tropical island first hand, there is really no way to grasp how wonderful it truly is! I think of it this way sometimes...I will have been living in a painting for three years by the time I leave. And, the colors will remain permanently fixed in my mind and heart long after I'm gone.
Fast forward to right here, right now. Reading this list makes me miss the island. And, I was right! I do miss all of those things!
Stay tuned for more throwbacks to lost archived drafts that I am digging up, always titled, "Old Things New..."
