International Bat Night
Tonight is #InternationalBatNight! Did you know that about 70% of the world's 1,300+ bat species are insectivores (insect eaters) and most of the rest are frugivores (fruit eaters)? Bats pollinate flowers and disperse fruit seeds, with many tropical plants depending entirely on bats to distribute their seeds. Bats are also the only mammal that are capable of sustained flight. In addition to their important contributions to the world's ecosystems, our nocturnal and oft-maligned friends have inspired great artists and craftspeople throughout history. Here is an ojime (or cord fastener) in the form of a bat from late 19th-century Japan.
