matt johnson in operation avalanche (2016)
the one thing about matt is that he's a networker and he is SKILLED at it. like that word has such a dirty association in my mind as a young person where it seems like you can get nowhere without knowing a guy but i truly look up to matt in the fact that he really cares about talking to other people, attentively listening to what other people have to say. i do think in part it comes naturally to him to thrive off of that conversation bouncing energy and that ability to know so many people that you're then able to connect a friend of a friend or go oh my pal who worked on this a couple years ago sounds like he'd be a really great fit for this actually do you know him? etc etc he's just very skilled at throwing himself into opportunity, he's always the conversationalist and of course he likes talking about film and his own creative endeavors and the industry like this is HIS thing and idk where i was quite going with this but basically like it's just very cool to see that his networking abilities come from a place of passion and love of what he does
"i need to be able to just be like 'Ok, we're playing now'" can be like the thesis of matt johnson i feel like
emotional support headband origin story
uploading this clip since the first minute of the interview is cut off from the youtube version i've watched
was originally not very interested in the story but was asked to read the book and then was able to relate to it since the three guys attempting to do the impossible reminded matt of him and his friends trying to make movies in their early 20s
says he understood what it felt like to know what success would do to your friendships and "what it was like to have a new person come into the group and be the leader", that he went through these things
felt like he was making a movie about young filmmakers as apposed to the blackberry
"yes we'll make this movie but matt can't be in it" and then he was anyway. "speaks to my inability as a director that i couldn't really communicate this" is so fascinating because like clearly you just wanted to play the guy but also feels like his subconscious wanted had two goals and it was 1) to play this character he found himself sliding right into the archetype of and 2) finding an easy segue into this character/director status matt thrives under
he presented a graph
"the first time he shared what he loved with me, first time i had ever sat down with somebody i trusted, first time i had ever creatively collaborated with somebody...."
im feeling incredibly tender and like my heart is spinning in a blender rn. peace and love on planet mattjay
