Don’t fall down Kaisei A. Okinoumi wishes kaisei B had shown up today.
Okinoumi's current winning streak
Okinoumi's current winning streak as M1 inspired me to start this thread. I was no statistics major in college so my odd calculation could be off.
Before Aki basho, Oki was 2-16 against Kise. Based on this record, Oki had 8 to 1 chance at beating Kise. Similarly, Oki had 11 to 4 chance at beating Kakuryu, his 2nd opponent. Oki's odd of beating those back to back is 22 to 1 (8*11 to 1*4 = 88 to 4). Continuing this way, Oki by beating his 6 opponents in a row, defied the odd of 621 to 1. If Las Vegas took this odd and allowed this bet, it means a $1 bet for Oki would have returned $621.
Moreover, if Oki beats Goeido today, he would have defied 2329 to 1 odd. That's a near miracle territory when it comes to sporting odds.
Oki - Oh man I am awesome!!
Kak - Oh man this basho sucks so far....
November 2015, Day 7. Okinoumi v Hakuho
Saved the best for last today. This is what happens when 0-6 goes up against 6-0. Having said that, Okinoumi puts in a fine performance against Yokozuna Hakuho for the first 95% of the bout. He weathers the initial charge, and even after giving up the hidari-yotsu (left underhand, right overhand) grip to the Yokozuna, he stays aggressive, keeps good position at the center of the dohyo, gets his own hidari-yotsu and then fearlessly, almost unbelievably, starts to walk Hakuho backwards toward the edge. Is this possible? Can Okinoumi secure his first win of the tournament on day 7 against the Yokozuna? No. No, he can't. Because Hakuho reminds us of why he's one of the all-time greats, reaching deep into the technique encyclopedia and executing a textbook yaguranage. He puts his right knee against Okinoumi's inner thigh, lifts all 360lbs off the ground with the strength of his left leg, turns and drops Okinoumi to 0-7.
November 2015, Day 6. Kakuryu v Okinoumi.
All three Yokozuna won today, but Kakuryu was the sketchiest. As usual, when he gets in trouble he starts to backpedal. Okinoumi does a great job of keeping Kakuryu from getting the belt grip he wants, and only a well-timed shove in the ribs dumps Okinoumi and saves Kakuryu's bacon.
