*Swipe* 1-9. Here is my take on #artist #RalphSteadman’s piece “#OkLetsParty” VS #TheMisfits #CrimsonGhost / #FiendSkull. Ralph’s ink splatter #art is most famous for appearing in #HunterSThompson’s Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. This is the first new artwork I’ve done totally from scratch lately, during this June of 2020. It was a surprise to myself and I like how it turned out. I worked on the majority of it for about three days. It is the kind of art I would seek out, anyway. Re-contextualizing punk or horror movie imagery is interesting. The Misfits are one of my favorite punk bands and always had a captivating aesthetic to go with their low-fi, fast and funny B-movie lyrics and musicianship. The Elvis-like crooning of Glenn Danzig mashed well with their unhinged yet melodic rock sound. It is a nice pairing with the unhinged visual approach of Steadman and by proxy the gonzo philosophy of his creative partner, the wild man of letters Hunter S. Thompson. You can imagine the skull either getting asked or asking the eternal question: “So, do you get anxiety?” Perhaps it represents millennial dating small talk, either in person or through those dreaded online apps. Or a tribute to my October 2019. Depending on how you read it, it could also be “so, you do get anxiety?” Mixed media: acrylic, ink and colored pencil on paper. I enjoyed cutting out the words and affixing them to the image. Though Ralph uses a compass, the circles in it were made by tracing the inside of my scissors. You don’t need to be an artist to be inventive. I was alternatively listening to @officialmisfits and watching the @steadmanart documentary For No Good Reason while working on this. Swipe for detail.
