Pirate Lolita Coord from Olamot 2015 convention (Olamot - adventures). Olamot is one of the biggest Geek, Anime & Manga, Sci-fi & Fantasy and Alternative Culture cons in Israel. I wore this outfit at 2015, and it was lots of fun. I wasn't photographed by Actual Photographers untill the end of the day, when I was all massy and sweaty (last photo - by Dani Zisserman). Selfie is with @nonobunny. A photo of me was also featured in an article about another geek etc' con - ICon, that is happening every Sukkot. You can see it here: https://www.geektime.co.il/icon-festival-2015-review/ I decided to upload these photos, because although this is not my best coord, it is definitely one I had tons of fun wearing! Coord rundown: Hat: gift, decorations on it are hand made. Blouse: Offbrand altered by me. JSK, neakbow: Bodyline, altered by me (changed bottons). Socks: Golf Boots: uncomfortable! Probably Clark's.
So! to continue my previous post: lectures and stuff from Olamot 2015 - I've been to a bunch!
The first lecture i attended was about Buffy and Angel and all the alternate worlds, as well as parallel dimensions, the shows had. It was fun, a great reminder of stuff I haven't watched in ages, with a lot of clips and an engaged, mostly not-annoying audience that made comments. But it didn't really go anywhere deep and was too short. I mean literally, it was supposed to be a half hour longer, for what we paid. So, umph.
A great lecture about alternate dimensions and getting lost in them. I was hoping it would include talk about Sliders, it was mostly why I wanted to attend that lecture… and it did! A lot! There was also discussion of time travel and really interesting ideas with fun presentation.
Right after, a lecture about Harry Potter and the Hogwarts houses/sorting. Which was not great. I guess it was still fun to hang with fellow HP fans, but the lecture itself didn't flow so well and didn't include any significant ideas/knowledge, or even had that much to say. A bit of a flop tbh.
Still on the HP front: a quiz! It was super fun, inclusive, not just for (but definitely also for) young children, and featuring really great questions. Each member of the audience got to put their name in "the goblet of fire" for a chance to participate, and I did! But I fear I was confronted with unfairly difficult questions! So I didn't last long, even though I answered a few questions right and of course, most questions right from the audience, whispered to my friend.
The last thing I went to was a Sherlock Holmes lecture, which I was most looking forward too and therefore mostly worried about disappointing me. But it didn't! it was really interesting, about Holmes as a godlike figure and what elements of his character, how he's presented in canon and how he's been received (fandom) can be seen as like a god. Not sure I 100% agree but it was definitely really interesting and should have been longer! This time because it was supposed to be 45 minutes and was, but I would have liked it to go on more, which would have allowed for more questions and discussion
Now, I try not to get pissy and annoying at BBC's Sherlock fans, as part of my respect to Superwholock fans and also as part of not being an elitist Sherlockian bitch who questions who is a "real" fan, 'cause I know that's bullshit etc. etc. But a thing I'd not stop myself getting angry about is people dissing Elementary, and I was so ready, let me tell you, but the lecturer never watched the show, so it was barely discussed. But when it was briefly brought up, and people were slightly disresepting it, my Fierce Protector was defitnitely showing. Something in me wanted to go hard over that, tbh. But it's probably for the best that I didn't lol. this whole paragraph is neither here nor there wtf
to conclude, i loved hanging with awesome people, even just, being around awesome people doing awesome things, you know? it was really cool and why i love going to cons
Okay I gotta write a post all about this con I've been to the last three days (Olamot 2015)
To non-locals,Olamot is one of the cons that takes place every year in Tel-Aviv, open to every sci-fi/fantasy/nerdy topic. There are lectures/panels/shows, tons of booths selling merch/diy stuff, and cosplayers everywhere.
Honestly though, I always get so excited for these cons, make sure to go to all the days, and have a lot of fun. And I did this time, too! But I felt a bit underwhelmed, or a bit like an outsider. Not all the time, and not always in a bad way at all. Could be I'm growing old or the local geek community is changing or that was just my mood this week. Anyway. This is gonna be a long post covering fucking everything I experienced there so…
There wasn't a cosplay competition, which i was kinda expecting (although, idk, maybe this con never has one), mostly as an opportunity to sit down and see a bunch of cosplayers present themselves (sometimes doing a short routine) ha. So that made me feel like there weren't than many cosplayers as there usually are, but that's probably not true! Some of my faves:
Two girls, I guess, were doing Thor and Loki, even though the Loki was not on much of a costume… but still recognizable. They posed as "kissing" behind Captain America's shield and were later spotted (by me) holding hands.
Two boys, I guess, dressed as Harley Quinn – which was really amazing, with full makeup and this huge hammer thing that she has – and Spiderman, spotting each other and stopping to rain compliments at each other's costumes
I did see a very impressive Groot for a like a second
Also seen for a second: Marceline the vampire queen, with her guitar and all! so cool
A young boy dressed as canon Sherlock Holmes. Yes!!!
A bunch of great Disney cosplays, including a cool redhead Anna from Frozen
A guy dressed as Death with a "My Apologies" sign, who I made a sad-angry face at when he walked into an HP lecture, because ugh! and then he sat next to me lol.
Another reason I kinda – but only kinda! – felt meh about this con was that I felt old and out of touch with all the young people's fandoms. Like, ultimate respect for Superwholock fans and the amazing things that they do, but it ain't really my jam, so it's weird. At some point, at a booth selling handmade dolls of various characters of these fandoms, the girl behind it complimented my plaid shirt (worn over my fangirl tshirt) and added "I love plaid! Like in Supernatural!". So I giggled awkwardly but… that's not actually anything bad! So what if that’s not why I wear plaid? And also, they made some really awesome things at that booth, and I loved hearing that same girl telling whomever that their Benedict!Sherlock doll kept falling off the table earlier, and they ~cried each time it fell…
There was also a group of starkid fans singing and performing/practicing at "their spot" – I couldn't catch a word of their songs, but damn, they were tireless. I swear we passed by that spot two times the same day, hours apart, and they were still there doing their thing. Amazingly, a girl selling stuff at a booth right in front of them didn't seem to mind that much at all! She just told a random guy what they're singing, confirming to me that they were indeed the starkid crowd lol.
Another instant that was like, generic fangirl and I loved it, was this conversation I caught by seemingly pretty-young girls: -"have you watched the latest episode?" -"there was a new episode? Spoilers! Lalalalalala…" plus another girl nearby was all "spoilers? what?!", and amazingly I kept hearing the "lalalalala" as I was walking away... The thing is, they were really shrieking that. Really. And I heard other "grown-ups" nearby being incredulous at them. But then, I smiled. They were fucking lovely. I'd be a tiny bit quieter, I should hope, but who gives a shit? Still no idea what episode of what show they were referring to…
Also, on two different occasions in the bathroom, two different girls asked me, and then started a conversation, about my Harry Potter shirt. I love those chance interactions. It could be strange-awkward how people just start talking to other people in these cons, how they sometimes point and say "I know you!" or, in my case, yell "Hawkeye!" upon spotting my Hawkeye tshirt (which some boy did, and I enjoyed it even though I was totally caught off-guard). But it's also fucking magical tbh
(this is too long so i’m making a separate post for the programming i attended)
