RECOMMENDED RELEASE OF THE WEEK: Sunburster “Ronin”

Probably the sludgiest they’ve ever been! A slow distorted start into Sunburster’s signature riff heavy / hardcore screaming progressions, but this time they incorporate awesome some stops, turned the bass way up and wrote the catchiest riffs ever that will keep your head nodding the entire time. The guitar lead at the end is BEYOND RAD! Doesn’t get much better than this, people! “RONIN” IS REQUIRED LISTENING!

Air Is Human “Equinox 2”

An erie, experimental, progressive rock EP that creeps into your sub conscience. The electronic elements, driving drum beats and overall catchy riffs will keep your attention while thought provoking progressions move you forward through this recording. Myrrias “All Alone”

Dreamy, wispy, shoegaze that is remarkably calming. Slightly depressing for those who are without significant others or good company, however, it truly captures that sentiment with the slowness of the vocal lines. Synthesizer parts underneath the main riffs paint a bleak landscape while the other instruments move the song forward in with a wayward pace. All in all, a solid effort that puts forth great chill tracks!

A great combination of Alternative indie rock and Folk punk. These Scrantonians put forth an amazing catchy single that rocks, yet is highly emotional. If your head isn’t moving to this track, check your pulse.

Sons “Live at The Clinic”

Bluesy, garage rock that is very White Stripes-like. Minimalistic, yet epic rock & roll! Every note is clear as day and each vocal is soulful as fuck! Belted out totally live, not only are all of the songs killer, but as a band you can tell how tight they are! FUCK YES to this whole album!

Tygerstrype “We Learn To Love Our Chains”

HIGHLY experimental pop music that has a psych feel that melds into a synthesized progression of electronic instruments. Indie rock guitar overtop adds some really interesting elements followed by almost always harmonized vocals that are hypnotizing! Not sure what to think the first run through, this album REALLY grew on me. Absolutely killer in every way and totally, profoundly genius!

There’s something unmistakably soulful about Old Charades’ music. Paying homage to their folk/blues influences, this duo creates simplistic yet powerful jams with tangible emotion in every verse. Please listall of your band members and their roles in the band. Sean Flynn (vocals, guitar) and Jerry Connor (drums)

What's your hometown (or what are your hometowns)? J-  I’m from Scranton, but am going to school in Philadelphia. S- I’m from Wilkes-Barre but now live in Scranton.

How did the band come together? How long has it been? J- My old band kind of started to stop playing shows. I’ve known Sean for a few years and I remember being at a show at the Golden Tea House and I got the urge to start playing shows again. I think I texted Sean that night and a few weeks later, we started playing music and writing together. It’s been about seven or eight months now.

S- Jerry approached me about doing a band that was a different shade of the bands we were in at that moment. A stripped-down, semi-folkie take on bands and music we liked and shared an interest in. It happened very quickly and suddenly we are almost a year into this band that seems like we are still in the process of fleshing it out. It’s a little crazy when you think on how fast it happened.

How have you grown since you started? J- I think writing songs together has become more fluid. It’s gotten easier to pick up on what Sean is going to try and do for a part.

S- Like Jerry said, the writing process has become much more fluid because we have a clear idea of what we want and the style of the band. We both were very clear of what we wanted to bring to the table for song styles and band direction and it really helps because it’s just us writing the songs. Also, the act of playing together is much tighter because we both know the songs and know the energy of the whole thing.

What sets you apart from other bands? S -Two piece bands are not a rare thing anymore and they are almost the new “it” thing. We both knew we had to do something that was different, even more so considering the scene we are in.  I know bands try and use their influences and build from that and try it make it sound new and not so much like the band they are borrowing from. We are VERY much open about showing our influences and all that. We are very open about being like “This is a Woody Guthrie lyric.” or “This song is ripped straight from the blues or an old time folk number…just played through a loud Fender Amp and guitar.” We pay homage to our influences by putting them up front to make them known.

J- Sean and I have been doing all the writing ourselves. We have friends who play bass with us in a live setting and on recordings, but for the most part everything has been written between Sean and I. I think it shows. It’s all down to earth lyrically and musically.

What's the best part about being in your band? J- The whole thing has been super fun so far. Band practices, songwriting, shows and recording have just been a blast. It’s just a lot of bad jokes and hanging out with one another. S- How much fun it is and open and relaxed it is even though we are making serious music.

More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making? J- I’ve been listening to a lot of Hot Water Music, Paint It Black, and Cory Branan. But we both really like bands like The Menzingers and The Gaslight Anthem. S – We both have common ground with bands like Gaslight Anthem and The Menzingers. That’s where it started but I reached back to my true roots before I got into punk rock and that is Americana folk, blues, old time music with folk singers from the 30’s and the whole 60’s thing. It’s also very much known that The White Stripes have a heavy hand in it is well but we don’t lean on that card as much as you think. Other big and more modern influences on me for this band are Bob Dylan, Wilco, and Jeff Tweedy’s solo album as well as Noel Gallagher from Oasis. I go more with his solo stuff because it’s simply amazing.

What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next? J- I think the fact that people have been saying they’ve really liked what they’ve heard so far has been an accomplishment. Bands asking us to play shows with them has been an honor, too. Right now, I’ve got my eyes set on the getting the rest of the EP out and playing all the shows we have booked through the spring. Hopefully we get to play a bunch of shows all over during the summer as well. S- I can’t wait to start working on the next album because I feel we have “it” now. We luckily had it when we did the EP but we just started to have it. We really have fleshed it out now and I can’t wait to show that off.

Thus far, what’s a favorite memory or something quirky that’s taken place with the band (in-studio, onstage, or elsewhere)? J- Right after we played our first time live, the first thing someone said to me was “that was fucking awesome” and that meant a lot. S – Everything is #Gucci

Is there anything in particular that you’d like people to take away from listening to your music? S- I try and keep in mind something Dave Van Ronk said back when he was playing in little clubs to 40 people in New York is that “If it’s not new and it never gets old, then it’s a folk song.” I hope we are doing right and keeping that tradition alive even though it’s loud and fast at times. I hope people will listen and get that this is just folk music.

If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be? J- I think getting people to realize that there is so much talent in a city’s music scene that is overlooked. It’s hard to get someone to pay five bucks to see a buncha bands in Philly basement, but those kids are dropping hundreds of bucks on some festival for one day. That’s cool and all, but you might find some band you really like in an unexpected spot. 

How did your band’s name come about? J- After one of our earlier band practices, we started thinking of names and came up flat. I remember driving home that night while listening to The Lawrence Arms. There was a line in their song that went “all charades go on forever” and the name kind of came from that.

What's the biggest mistake someone's made while playing? J- We changed the ending of one of ours songs in the middle of recording it. The next show we played, Sean played the ending of the track the old way. It wasn’t a big mistake, and I don’t think anyone noticed, but I like busting him about that.

Any pre-performance rituals? J- I usually like to set up my stuff early so I can just hang out with the other bands and the people there. That’s one of my favorite parts of the whole show.

S – Singing ever song to myself super fast to make sure I remember all the words and have Jerry ask me if I’m ok because I usually get nervous for reasons I do not know.
