Some Essential Websites for Design Students
Here are just a few websites you may not have spent too much of your attention on, and I to this day check as soon as I switch my mac on!
The Dieline:
The world's largest packaging design website. Over the past few years i've seen it grow into a fantastic resource for any design student wanting to see some very innovative packaging from both professionals and students.
Brand New:
Brand New is a fantastic website that is all about rebranding. It picks apart updated variations of existing logos and is an essential website for students to see the thought and reasoning behind major branding exercises showing a deft touch of terminology and critique worthy of any investigation process.
Ads of The World:
Ads of the World is a treasure trove of different forms of advertising from all over the globe. Whether you are looking for ambient advertising, or direct mail shots or even video advertising, this website has them in abundance. In addition to the lovely visuals of the advertising, it also supplies you with the advertising agencies and creatives involved.
Oli Phillips:
Now i'm probably preaching to the converted here, but Oli Phillips is the go to guy on Tumblr for design. I sit perplexed at how he has enough time in the day to find all these fabulous design examples, but seriously, Oli, being a student himself, is definitely one to look out for in future!
Behance
Behance is a fabulous website that allows you to share your online portfolio in a very clean and efficient way. Whilst allowing for lots of opportunity for networking it also is a good way of having an online presence until you can produce your own website based portfolio.
Vintage Me Oh My:
Now i'm letting you into a secret here, Vintage Me Oh My is pretty much my favourite little not-so-well-known websites out there. I can spend hours on here pouring over the vintage designs. This should be an essential stop for any budding graphic designer, until you have seen where graphic design has begun, how can you possibly understand how to take it forward? This website will be your favourite.
Blurb:
The easiest (if a little expensive) method of getting a professional book made. If you have the money to spend on making a fabulous portfolio book, then you could do worse than look towards Blurb.
Ampersand Magazine:
And finally, I know, a little shameless plugging here, but the magazine I set up to give new creative talent a platform is going to hopefully be a feature for a while yet. Whilst the magazine may be changing to bi-monthly, it won't be changing the way it presents new talent. By also changing to a completely free venture, free to read, free to download, it will also enable you to put something different into your portfolio. Lots of people featured inside have already seen the benefits to their career! (shameless plug once again over!)
