ACT ONE: SCENE ONE

It was a long way from Boring, Oregon to New York City. The bus fare was over a hundred dollars, a substantial amount of his New York budget. Somewhere around Iowa, when the bursting fits of adventure laughter had faded into a small sigh of contentment, Oliver began to have his doubts. His legs had cramped up and the scenery had become flat and agricultural. Not even the fuchsia sunrise could make Iowa beautiful, he discovered, but it didn’t matter. Oliver Schermerhorn wasn’t stopping in Iowa. He’d gotten this far; there was no use turning back.

He wondered if the others would ever escape Boring.

Tyler would get out of Boring, he thought with a smile. Maybe he’d end up in New York too, Oliver’s jacket and glasses in hand. His protegé.

Luke might get out of Boring, even if it was just to California. Hell, he’d directed a movie at 14.

Emaline… he wasn’t sure. Thinking of Emaline made his heart ache. She’d likely woken this morning, gotten on the bus and realized that he’d left. She probably felt betrayed. They’d always talked  about going to New York together after she graduated, to face Broadway side by side, but she needed to figure out who she was without him.

And Oliver needed to figure out who he was without her, without Boring.

He stretched his legs. Yawning, he stuffed his hands in his pockets. Hmm? Something was in his pocket. He uncrumpled the small piece of paper and then grinned. It was a nutmeg label.
