What's Peaky Blinders, and why is someone making you take stuff that you've made for it off of your own blog? I'm confused.
(TL;DR, BEWARE!!)
Peaky Blinders is an upcoming BBC mini-series that stars one of my favorite actors, Cillian Murpy. A few days ago, a promotional clip featuring Cillian discussing the distinctive haircut his character has in the series was released onto the Internet. A few fans and myself each made animated gifs from the clip. Those gifs have since been reblogged and are floating all around Tumblr, which most Tumblr users know is par for the course when gifs are posted.
This morning, I received a message from a man named Patrick affiliated with the film production company Oliver's Island. He told me that the clip was not meant to be uploaded for public viewing and that he had intended to password-protect it. (The clip had been online for four days before Patrick discovered his error.) He also claimed that he was in "loads of trouble" and that he will likely lose his job and possibly be taken to court, and would I please remove my post. I posted the gif set yesterday evening and it had since received 40 notes, so quite a few people had already seen it, but I felt bad for Patrick so I made the post private this morning.
But, I've since noticed that other people have similar gif sets of the clip up on their blogs. (I believe it is because they did not tag their gif set with "peaky blinders", and that Patrick is discovering the gifs via that tag.) Now, I know in the grand scheme of things this is not a huge, important, life-changing event. But I really do not appreciate being asked to remove something that I myself took the time to make, while others are "allowed" to keep their graphics up. And I also do not appreciate being guilted (because, really, if you say that you are being threatened with legal action and job termination then of course I'm going to feel very bad for you and likely comply with your request) into removing content when it was not my responsibility to keep it under wraps in the first place. I don't believe that is professional, nor do I think it is professional to go after Tumblr users for something as trivial as animated gifs that are usually only seen by other Tumblr users.
Like you said, it's my blog and I only privated the content because I felt bad for Patrick--everyone makes mistakes. But I fail to see how me removing my own content helps his cause in any way when it's still floating around Tumblr. Basically, this whole affair is just a hot ass mess.
ETA: I wouldn't have minded removing my gifs as long as others had to do the same as well. I don't really like that I was asked to remove something in the first place, but I was amicable about it. It just feels like picking and choosing to me, you know?
The Internet Is A Public Place
Hi there, please please can you remove your post and link to the peaky blinders clip about haircuts. I uploaded that clip and forgot to password protect it. I'm in loads of trouble because it's been leaked on the internet and was just a viewing copy. This will probably cost me my job and I could be taken to court. Please please remove it. Thanks you, Patrick

Well, the clip has been protected… again.
So I, personally, have not seen these emails that have been apparently threatening people about their jobs and possible legal action. However, having dealt with a major corporation in my past about a damn .org domain name, I can tell you it gets me pretty riled up.
Why?
Because, if they cared that much about this clip not being available for people, then don’t release it to the internets…. anywhere. Even if you believe the place to be your personal web/cloud drive. I have a cloud drive and I do not put anything on there that I would not mind if someone happened to get a hold of it. If you care that much about your data, keep it on your hard drive that happens to be encrypted, copy it to a disc if you want to privately share, copy it to a USB, but don’t put a copy on the internets. Someone, somewhere is going to get it. The internets is bigger than you think. However big you think the internets is, it is bigger than that.
Once someone releases it, the horse is out of the gate. You can’t unring the bell. There isn’t a magic internet, magnetic eraser. There are so many ways that people can download the clip from any spot, that if someone thinks they have solved the problem… they are sorely mistaken. Don’t, for heaven’s sake, take it out on every person who happened to post it. While the clip may not be considered legitimate, you don’t know how the poster obtained the copy. Rather, spend your time finding the root of the problem. Who put it on the internet in the first place? Go find that person and do your voodoo on them.
Take a look at Metallica and how useful it was for them to go after every person that downloaded their music from Napster. They created a lot of ill will, and frankly the copies still exist… somewhere.
I’ll get off my soap box now. I just get irritated when major players in a sense bully people because their intellectual property (IP) was leaked when they didn’t take the proper precautions to protect what they had. Someone leaked it, go find that person. The others, they are innocent bystanders, in my opinion.
Did I make a copy of the clip? Well, only my hairdresser and local friends will know for certain….

I made it private, so it's no longer viewable on my blog, but please keep in mind that it's been reblogged quite a few times! Sorry you got in trouble, it was a very nice clip. :(
