Dizzy Heights
if I had vertigo, the last week would've been hell. Luckily for me, I've never had a fear of heights, so kicking off last week with cocktails and canapes at Sushi Samba was awesome! If you haven't been, Sushi Samba is at the top of the Heron Tower near Liverpool St, and it's TALL. You're looking down on the Gherkin. Tower Bridge looks tiny. The tower of London looks less like an imposing prison and more like your little brother's lego set.
It was the restaurant's 1 year anniversary party, so I went along with my friend Margo, who is visiting from Australia (where I was her bridesmaid a couple of years ago!)
Neneh Cherry played while we chased the veggie sushi offerings around the room and bumped into most of London, including the lovely Olivia Inge (below) who I shot for my 'Models and Mothers' project. (Buy the book here)
A few days later it was time to fly to Italy for my boyfriend Phil's birthday. We flew into Pisa and just managed to make the train to Florence - luckily, as they only go every few hours.
We were proper tourists, and my A-level Art History came back to me as we toured the Uffizi gallery and I gave Phil a slightly embellished (shhh) historical tour of the Botticelli's and Caravaggio's.
We then proceeded to climb most of the historical monuments (earning our pizza for later on!), including the 450 or so steps of the Duomo! We wanted to see the amazing ceiling frescoes close up, but ended up climbing some seriously steep steps up to the roof of the dome.
The view from the top. Rain in the distance over the tuscan hills.
The thing that struck me most during the trip was the ceilings. There's so much to see on the floors, walls and and hallways of these grand buildings that sometimes you forget to look up.
Big Mistake.
Huge.
We then proceeded to eat porcini mushroom pasta and shaved fresh zucchini with truffle oil and A LOT of tiramisu. For four days. Yep. Birthday officially celebrated.
