Is Ol’ Roy Good Dog Food? My Real Feeding Experience
Ol’ Roy is one of the cheapest dog foods in the U.S. Many dog owners buy it because it is affordable, easy to find, and comes in large bags. But does it actually support good health?
I tested Ol’ Roy with adult dogs over several weeks. Here’s what I found.
What Worked Well
Dogs loved the taste
Very affordable for multi-dog homes
Easy to store and stays fresh
Works okay for short-term feeding
What Did Not Impress Me
Corn and fillers dominate the ingredient list
Protein quality is below average
Some dogs had gas and soft stool
Coat quality stayed only fair
Ol’ Roy meets basic AAFCO nutrition standards, but it focuses more on low cost than high-quality nutrition. It can help dogs meet basic needs, but it may not help them truly thrive long term.
If your budget allows, Purina ONE, Kirkland Signature, and 4Health are better choices with stronger ingredients and better protein sources.
Final Rating: 5.5/10
Best for: ✔ Tight budgets ✔ Temporary feeding ✔ Multi-dog households
Not ideal for: ✘ Puppies ✘ Sensitive stomachs ✘ Long-term health-focused feeding
