Let's Talk About the Games
Let’s Talk About the Games
We are starting Week 2 of the Summer Olympics and man have they been exciting so far! They inspire us to dream big, to set grand goals, to find a crush, to learn a new sport, to go for the gold! But are we too critical of winning? Are we too concerned with only the gold? Do the other medals even matter? A quick look at the medal tally [as of this writing, Day 9] will see that while the USA has…

Olympic Fever
Do you have Olympic fever? I do. It’s a heat of indignation that tug of war has been excluded from the summer games. It was in the games in the early 20th century and well attended. Who doesn’t love tug of war? It would garner astronomical TV ratings.
No one will recall the Tug of War controversy in the 1908 Games when the American teams withdrew after the London Police team were accused of wearing extremely heavy shoes. London team won first place.
Just imagine
Russia vs US
North vs South Korea
Norway vs Sweden
Who wouldn’t tune in for Andorra vs Liechtenstein
Red China vs Taiwan
Imagine during the soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, the 1968 Olympic year, Czechoslovakia vs Soviets
Hungary vs Soviets during Hungarian revolution in 1956, Olympic year.
Iran vs Iraq
East Germany vs West Germany in the 60’s would have seen TV ratings through the roof.
Imagine if Luxembourg had a great team and was going for the gold versus a superpower. David vs Goliath promotions.
You know the Russians would be doping for sure. Might have to do massive testing for all the teams, like daily. Or just let them steroid up as much as they want.
A fun twist would be a quicksand pit in the middle. Add to the frenzied atmosphere. We would assure safety with a horse nearby with a rope around the saddle at the ready.
I also don’t see why shuffleboard isn’t in the games, they have curling. Uniforms on shuffleboard teams could be great. Plaid pants, striped shirts.
Can have individual tug of war as part of a new decathlon. New decathlon:
Tug of war
Shuffleboard
Standing High Jump (early Olympic sport, standing next to a high bar and trying to jump over it)
Club Swinging (another removed Olympic sport, do a routine with clubs, try to not knock oneself out)
Barbed Wire Splicing
Axe throwing (to garner millennial interest).
Mah Jong
Potato Sack Racing
100 Meter Egg and Spoon Racing
Belly Flop diving
Assuredly, would take an all-around athlete to compete.
Perhaps the new decathlon is a little too much to ask for. Let’s start with getting tug of war back in the games. A groundswell of grassroots effort is needed. Spread the word! Who doesn’t love tug of war?
Tokyo or Bust
There are only 4 more days until the 2020 Olympics. And, like most of you, I’ve already got the list of competition times, channels, and events copied and added to my calendar. I’ve got my plans made to watch as many and as often as I can. My only regret is that I don’t have a TV in the bathroom so I’ll have to prop the door so I’ll still be able to hear the things going on [or dash in and out…

Why Olympic?
So, as you probably know by now, the Olympics are going strong. As of this moment [according to Bing], the United States has 3 gold, 6 silver, and 4 bronze medals for a total of 13. Pretty impressive. However, we’re only a few days into the two week celebration of athletics and sportsmanship and international competition relations. A lot can still happen. That’s why I’m glued to my television…
