(10 minutes later, drinking coffee)

the big sister you always wished for, the best friends with arms always opened wide. the comfort and familiarity of your favorite pajamas, and the smile that reminds you of the first day of the school year (just with a lot less dread). 

there’s a kind of sadness in her eyes that’s reminiscent of the ocean on a very cloudy day but no rain, and a weariness in her voice when she finally comes home from that god awful internship because ‘you always need a backup plan,’ even though everybody knows she’ll be wonderful at what she wants to do, even if she hasn’t realized it herself. 

the one who goes wandering into the streets after 8pm because you were supposed to be home by now and don’t you know the world is dangerous? what if something had happened? overly cautious, overly protective of those she considers her own, a child who was as docile as a butterfly suddenly becoming the tiniest bit more aggressive in the face of danger towards those she loves.

she’s yet to see her own worth, how valuable she is to others. doesn’t know yet how her diligence to making the morning pot of coffee keeps everybody going. doesn’t know her laugh that she tends to hide brings just the tiniest bit more happiness coupled along with those corny jokes around the watercooler with the other interns. 

sometimes the confidence in her shines through like a bright light, but for now it seems to quietly slip out, another little ray of light that shines from her.
