Miura Ayako is a famous Christian Japanese writer. April 13 this year marked 100 years since her birth (she passed away in 1999). Her work is admired by many around the nation, Christian and non-Christian. A number of her works have been made into movies and plays. She shared the gospel through all of her books. ⁠ ⁠ Two of her most famous books are "Freezing Point" and "Shiokari Pass." Both have been translated into English and numerous other languages.⁠ ⁠ She was born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido and there is a small museum dedicated to her in that town. Kutchan church has a Sunday School called Robako (Little Donkey) Kids. It meets from 9:20 to 10 am on Sunday mornings. When the church called a pastor 5 years ago there was no children’s work at all. For the next 2 years Sunday School was run by the pastor and his wife for their 2 sons. Now around 10 children attend Robako Kids including some from non-church families and they have other adult helpers. Seeds sown in childhood through Sunday schools, Christian kindergartens and mission schools make it so much easier for Japanese to come to faith in later life. Understanding the Japanese mindset #Repost @omf_japan ・・・ "Why are they so resistant to change?" This was my honest thought after one year of serving as a missionary in a Japanese church.⁠ ⁠ I had requested to be placed in a Japanese church so that I can learn about the Japanese church and culture firsthand. Yet over time, I felt increasingly frustrated. I felt that I was not being heard. I was discouraged that my ideas and suggestions were rejected all the time.⁠ ⁠ "At Bible College we were taught to not make any changes in the first three years of working at a new church," the Japanese pastor in my church shared with me. Coming from Australia this was perplexing. In Australia, which is a relatively young nation, new ideas are welcomed. Change is a good thing, not a threat.⁠ ⁠ Even though I was confused it occurred to me that I should ask why rather than jump to conclusion. I am glad I did. ⁠ "When you introduce a change you’re effectively saying that what they used to do is not good enough. We need to be considerate of those who have faithfully guarded past traditions," the pastor explained.⁠ ⁠ It was one of the most humbling and eye-opening conversation I had during my time there and it helped me to grow a deeper appreciation of the Japanese mindset, in particular, their respect for tradition and others’ feelings. ⁠ It was a moment of realisation. This month marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War. In 2015 a book—about some remarkable events that happened during and after the war—called "Wounded Tiger" was published in English. Ravi Zacharias described the book as "an amazing, enthralling story". The book is "a true story of how . . . Mitsuo Fuchida—the man who led both the planning and the execution of the Pearl Harbor raid—became a Christian evangelist after the war." The book “beautifully weaves together three strands of the story: Fuchida himself; Jake DeShazer, who came to faith while suffering horribly in a Japanese POW camp; and a missionary family by the name of Covell, whose daughter played an integral part in God leading Fuchida to the Christian faith” (quotes from Timothy Boyle, missionary to Japan). Pray for the salvation of the Japanese people. #Repost @omf_japan ・・・ Longest Golden Week Ever⠀ From this Saturday, Golden Week—Japan’s longest string of national holidays—will begin. Due to the new Emperor’s enthronement on May 1st, this year it will consist of 10 consecutive national holidays—the longest Golden Week ever. ⠀ Most students rejoice over this long holiday. However, parents who still have work are stressed, as many have limited childcare options. ⠀ In Japan, taking long personal holidays is frowned upon, because that leaves your co-workers to hold the fort in your absence. So, this Golden Week is a perfect opportunity to explore the world without guilt.⠀ However, it’s not all good news. Since many people will be traveling at the same time, most tickets are expensive. Roads and Japanese tourist spots will be crowded.
