Ye Ole Arckion: Something in the Water ❍ Part 2

     Sharp nails dug into stone. With one hand, the frosted cerata-having Marinofigurna dragged themself onto the flat rock. They turned so they were on their back, holding the fry close so she didn’t fall back into the water as they pushed themself farther from the waves. Their chest heaved from exhaustion as they looked down at the fry who had finally opened her eyes.

     Big crystal pools stared at them, seeing them as nothing more than a white blur. Her mouth was gaping like a fish out of water as the barely noticeable gills on her side were opening and closing rapidly. Her stubby arms stayed close to her sides as she wiggled in distress. 

     “You’ll adjust.” They uttered. 

     Their voice was like dripping honey, soothing the fry enough to catch their attention. Her wiggling was slowing. They hummed in contemplation. 

     “Ah, so you like my voice. Does it remind you of that queen, hm?” They spoke as they held her in the air, “Let it flow into you and settle in. Just like the water. Your body will begin to notice the difference and switch accordingly. It gets much easier when you dry completely, trust me.”

     Another rumbling hum left their throat, staring at the Marinofigurna fry they held up. They swayed her side-to-side in the air recklessly, body rocking with them.

     “You almost look like that king.” Their lips curled up slightly in disgust and they let her fall onto their torso. 

     Almost agonizingly slow the tingle that came with drying off began to tickle their bottom half. Time ticked much too slowly as they lay on the cold rocks for the sensation to vanish with the water. Each ceras on their tail shrunk with the seconds, taking their time to flatten out into two legs that matched the rest of their bare upper body. The same happened to the fry, her shimmery scales melting into smooth, tubby legs with chubby little toes.

     The Marinofigurna was fortunate not to hear the shrill cry that accompanied one’s first transformation coming from the girl. She appeared next to indifferent about the whole thing only kicking her feet as if she was flicking her tail. 

     They finally stood with narrowed eyes staring at the water that lapped at the cavern’s walls. Nothing was interesting with the waves aside from some bubbles of sea foam here and there near the rocky walls. After searching each inch of the water they departed from the edge, deeper into the cave.
