"Captain Levi, you killed two good children and broke a father's heart today."
Peter Ral had always been a sunny person - a trait both his son and daughter inherited from him. Maybe it was the reason why he stood there, at the front of the grave of his two dead children, - one tomb buried a chewed arm, and the other...empty - smiling at the Captain as he blurted the painful words.
Captain Levi was a young man close to his heart. A former squadmate of his son, Pete, who died five years ago in the hands of a titan while trying to save humanity's strongest soldier. The only thing that came back to their household was a left arm and a promise from the raven-haired man that he would do everything in his power to protect and preserve Pete's legacy.
Peter Ral mourned for the loss of his son, but the painful experience ignited something in his daughter's heart.
Petra, the brave and fearless Petra, kind and compassionate, she was both soft and hard in her small body. His little girl decided to follow in the footsteps of her dead brother (in all aspects) and decided to join the Corps. She had the brightest fire in her eyes, and for a second, Peter was convinced that she would be back and be safe at all times.
But Peter should've learned his lesson.
He was all giddy, smiling, and beaming at the Captain who promised him the protection of his daughter (something the Captain failed to do to his first child...and failed again to his second) when he approached him after the expedition.
Now, he was mourning on the graves of his dead children.
What surprised him the most is that he never once felt hate or loathing towards the man. In fact, there was only pity.
And maybe affection. And love.
It seemed that the Captain has a special place in every Ral's heart.
So he did what he needed to do. He walked towards him, and he noticed his deeper and darker under eyes. Captain Levi doesn't flinch, but he stiffened when he enveloped him in a tight embrace.
"Do not let me mourn for the loss of my last living child," he told him, and Peter felt the Captain's chest rise, a question of 'who?' was ready to escape the younger man's lips.
