I will rave about Baldur's Gate 3 until the day I die. It's the first time I've played online (long story, I'm shy) and being in narrative design myself now, I just cannot get over the detail and the storyline progression. I will shamelessly admit that I'm building The Missing in the same spirit; certain information is only available on certain paths, certain endings are tied to certain characters etc. I know it's ambitious for a VN app, but idk, it's so compelling. I am also a decades long player of The Sims, it makes me happy. Other than that, The Witcher Wild Hunt is beautiful and I have a thing for Batman Arkham City.

I've been meaning to play Disco Elysium for a long time now and I have Dragon age... something or other, the one from 10 years ago, waiting for me once I finish The Missing.

I just did something deeply silly: ordered a tabletop game for 3-5 players that I intend to play against myself. Will it be a ridiculous exercise in metagaming?* Absolutely! Will I ever be surprised at anything that happens? Probably not! Will I screw things up and have to do all sorts of ridiculous shit to keep anything going? Assuredly! Does it get around the problem of never having anyone around who’s willing to humor me for long enough to get through the story? THAT WOULD BE THE ENTIRE FUCKING POINT, YES.

We’ll see how this goes. ;)

*Hey, I’m a writer. I’m perfectly used to orchestrating multiple characters on that level. I’ll make it work!

hey pia, any thoughts on the new stardew valley update? you can get caught trying to date the whole town now, and ah.... the cutscene is so sad it made me wanna wrap all of them up in blankets!!!!!!!!

I haven’t played it! I saw it was all about cooperative gaming which I hate, so I haven’t...played. Via your ask I looked it up and that’s how I realised there was other stuff. So thanks...er, SV development people, for not initially saying you’d be adding anything else except multiplayer, which I don’t give two shits about.

But actually I haven’t played Stardew Valley at all since I wrote The Wind that Cuts the Night. I ended up mostly playing Starbound and Slime Rancher. Though I have been thinking about starting yet another farm because I want to do a Homestuck / Stardew Valley crossover fic.

I’ll go watch some Youtube of the new cut-scene of everyone catching you trying to date the whole town. Honestly I never tried that anyway (I only ever gave a bouquet to one person per game), so it’s likely something I never would have seen without the assistance of Youtube. Some of the new developments look cool though! Especially the auto-grabber!

As a person who loved the Mass Effect trilogy for its story, characters, romances, and ability to make decisions, can you recommend a good game like that for me?

I haven’t found non-BioWare games that scratch all the itches the same way they manage to do. Also, I have a LOT of random games and YET most of them sit unfinished (or unstarted!!) while I replay Mass Effect for the umpteenth time, so... 

Have you played the Dragon Age games? Since they’re also BioWare, they share a lot of similarities with Mass Effect, although you play a different main character in each of the installments. Dragon Age: Origins was the first BioWare game I played and fell in love with. The only weird thing about it is that it has an unvoiced protagonist (and I find that hard to go back to after the fully-voiced other protags). IMO, you want to play all three games, though, as their storylines build on each other (even though the main characters are different).

I love, love, love, loved Horizon Zero Dawn, though that’s PS4-only. It didn’t have romances, although there were so many awesome characters it was very easy to imagine/headcanon romances. It had a great story, amazing visuals, a FANTASTIC MAIN CHARACTER OMG, and lore I couldn’t wait to discover more of.

I hear really good things about the Witcher. I actually own these games but haven’t played them yet! (soon, soon). I loved Transistor, though that’s more linear--it has a great story and lovely characters, though. 

If anyone else has any good recommendations, maybe leave a comment on this post? Then anon can come check it :)

Good news on the gaming front! I’ve finally had enough internet to download Mass Effect 1. The other two will follow as soon as I’ve finished the first part. Don’t wanna start multiple runs again, like I did in Dragon Age. Aaaaand I managed to get a few mods for Dragon Age Inquisition working. nothing fancy, just some freckles and really black hair. But now Meretari indeed looks like she’s supposed to look. :D
