The costumes of Jenny Lind: The Greatest Showman
After seeing a couple of posts on LinkedIn showing the progression of the costumes for Rebecca Ferguson’s character in The Greatest Showman, i reached out to the maker of her costumes - Giles Montezin of Giles Montezin Studios - to see if he would allow me to create a blog and share some of the amazing photos with you. He happily agreed so here we go!
Known as the Swedish Nightingale throughout her life-time, the real Jenny Lind was an Opera singer from Stockholm. Although her dress inspired the designer and clear connections can be made, her costumes in the play have been brought into the 21st century, along with the rest of the film.
You can see from these 2 images that the necklines and the silhouettes of the dresses remain very similar. However, they have been updated with new fabrics and more modern techniques of applique.
The Dresses In Progress
Dress 1.
As a costume student, being able to see progression photos, really helps you see how the dress has been brought to life, from the toile stage to the end result. And we even get a sneaky photo before Rebecca is about to shoot her scene!
Dress 2.
I adore how this dress has been tried and tested to find the right amount of bulk that would help the character of Jenny Lind, really stand out on an otherwise empty stage.
My absolute favourite part of this dress has to be the embellishment. Personally, i love to work with my hands rather than on industrial machines so detail like this really catches my attention, as i assume it does for everyone under the bright spotlights on stage.
As i have just finished constructing my first garment at University, i understand how important fittings are to the final costume. I don’t think you really understand that costumes for stage and screen aren’t just generic store sizes, but are truly fit for that specific actor/actress. Images like this aren’t really available to the public and i think it’s great that Giles has been kind enough to let me share them with you.
Rebecca, again in the final outfit waiting to shoot her scene.
I’m sure by now that you’ve all seen The Greatest Showman, but if you haven’t GO. Its amazing and the costumes, designed by Ellen Mirojnick are just exquisite.
I’d like to thank Giles for letting me share these very special photographs. If you would like any more info, head over to his site - gmontezinstudio.com
