27 “I’m pregnant.” for Nel and Everett
“Okay, two minutes,” Nel says to herself, nodding as she stares at the stick in her hands. This wasn’t the first pregnancy scare the two had encountered. The last had almost broken them up over what turned out to be nothing but a sickness bug. Wanting to avoid a repeat of the drama, Nel had decided to rule this one out alone. “Well, this one is faulty,” she whispers, tossing the test aside as a faint blue line appears. She takes another and another, each test harder to look at. Panic rose inside her chest, head dizzying as over and over again blue lines appear. She wraps her arms around her torso, head over the toilet as she starts to retch. “No, no, no..” Nel whimpers.
“Nel?” a voice comes from the other side of the door followed by light knocking. When she doesn’t answer, Everett walks into the bathroom. “Hey.. are you -” he cuts off mid sentence, eyes wide as he spots the pregnancy tests dotted around the floor. He freezes, not saying a word as he joins her on the cold tile floor. The silence between them seems to stretch on forever.
Broken sobs bubble up and escape Nel’s lips as Everett pulls her into his arms. “You’re okay, you’re okay,” he repeats, rubbing her back in soothing circles. “I’m not okay! I’m pregnant..” she chokes out.

“So this is where you’re all hiding?” Everett says, walking into the garden toward Nel. She smiles at him as he joins her on the picnic blanket, kissing her cheek. “Gross,” she jokes whilst swiping at her cheek playfully. Barely a moment passes before arms wrap around him “daddy!” the little girl squeals, bounding into his arms. Wobbling toward him on unsteady chubby legs is a tinier girl, almost identical to the other. Their bouncing brown curls matching Nel’s but their bright green eyes mirroring their daddy. “Where’s my kisses?” he asks them. The older child chimes in with a chorus of “No daddy!” between giggling, pushing his face away from hers as the smaller girl copies her big sister. “They are just like you!” Everett laughs and shakes his head.
