Species To Know When You’re On The Go: Fangens
A handful of species have established permanent settlements across their respective regions of the galaxy. One such species you might meet when you’re traveling through space is the Fangens.
A common adage among spacefarers is “never call a Fangen a Fangen”. The phrase stems from the fierce individuality that every Fangen takes pride in. Rule 1 of Fangens is to learn their name. Luckily, there are only 117 recorded Fangen names.
On their native planet, Ondek-Fang, Fangens appear as enormous amorphous mounds of writhing black ooze. This appearance is due to their biology: Fangens are composite organisms, formed by trillions of microorganisms working together. This mode of life was very successful on Ondek and evolved unencumbered by predators. Once a mound reaches critical mass, its component parts become capable of brain-like interactions, giving them sentience. In total, their are 117 Fangens, a fact which often baffles new travelers.
If you ever meet a Fangen off of Ondek, you’ll be meeting a small portion of the Fangen still living on Ondek. Fangens devised spacefaring equipment which could carry portions of themselves across space while maintaining a connection to the original organism.
Identifying individual Fangens is simple with some research. The Fangen Nominal Catalog, as upkept by the Galactic Stewardship, lists all 117 names and identifying features of the equipment each Fangen uses. Save yourself from a lot of unneeded hostility the next time you visit a Fangen-controlled planet.
