“Am I missing something?”
Ren doesn’t know the answer he’s expecting from Goro. He doesn’t even know what he’s asking, really. He just knows that over the last week things have felt… off. His bag always feels like it’s missing a certain weight, too many times he’s tried to respond to messages that weren’t there, and he keeps seeing people he doesn’t know in the corner of his eye and having them disappear when he actually looks.
Like phantoms, his mind supplies and Ren’s kneejerk reaction is to balk at that concept.
Maybe he just wants Goro to tell him he’s being paranoid.
Instead, Goro sits up in their bed, rolls his eyes and says “Well, obviously. Took you long enough to notice.”
Ren blinks at him. “What.”
“C’mon, you’re their leader aren’t you? You’re supposed to be sharper than this.”
“I… have no idea what you’re talking about.” Ren says. “What am I missing? And also why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
“I couldn’t tell you earlier because you didn’t notice.” Goro says impatiently.
“Alright, alright.” Ren adjusts his glasses. “So, whatever this is, you can’t tell me about it, I have to come to a conclusion about it by myself?”
“There you go, catching on.”
“Shut up.”
“So all week I’ve been feeling weird.” Ren says. “Like things aren’t like they’re supposed to be.”
“And what does that mean?”
“It means my boyfriend’s a dumb detective who likes watching me flounder around in the dark?”
Goro crosses his arms. “I already told you, I can’t tell you what’s going on. You need to take this seriously.”
“I don’t know what to say!” Ren snaps. “Things have been weird. Give me a hint here!”
Goro sighs. “Ren, close your eyes.”
“What? I’m-”
“Just do it.”
Ren closes his eyes.
“Now reach out to me.” Goro says
“I don’t see the point in-”
“Ren!” Goro snaps. “Please?”
Ren reaches his hand out, but can’t find Goro’s shirt. “What-”
“Don’t open your eyes.”
“Goro, this isn’t funny.” Ren says. “Goro-”
“Ren. There’s nothing there.” Goro says. “I’m not- you have to wake up? Okay? You have to find ou- your friends.”
“Goro, what are you-”
“Sorry, Ren.”
Ren opens his eyes, and he’s alone.
