A regular blood glucose monitoring system is an important tool to help you manage your diabetes. Our blood glucose metres provide a blood sugar reading in just a second. By identifying and recording changes in blood sugar levels, you will learn more about how diet, exercise, stress, and other factors affect diabetes. It also gives you the benefit of having a diabetes test at home.
What are the benefits of monitoring blood sugar?
Regular glucose monitoring is one way for people with diabetes to learn more about their condition. When it comes time to make important decisions about medication, exercise, and diet, knowing and analysing your glucose levels will help you, your doctor, and your entire health team.
By checking your blood sugar levels regularly, you will also know if your blood sugar is too high or too low, both of which can cause serious symptoms and health problems. Your doctor will calculate your exact blood sugar level based on your age, type of diabetes, your overall health, and other factors. It is important to keep your glucose levels within your target range as far as you can.
Problems with high and low blood sugar levels:
Glucose is blood sugar. Insulin acts as a key to allowing glucose to enter cells to retain energy. The body needs glucose for energy, but too much glucose can cause damage to the organs over time. People with diabetes may not have enough insulin or insulin resistance leading to high blood sugar levels.
If you do not get treatment, high blood sugar levels can lead to long-term problems, including:
Low blood sugar levels can also cause symptoms including:
Lower blood sugar can lead to serious problems, such as fainting as well as coma!
Individuals believe in using portable metres to check the blood sugar level and that is known as Glucometers. These work by analysing a small amount of blood, usually from the tip of the finger.
The lancet gently strokes your skin to get blood. Metres tell you the sugar in your current blood. But, as blood sugar levels change, you need to check your blood levels often and record them.
What is continuous glucose monitoring?
Continuous monitoring of glucose automatically tracks glucose levels, also called blood sugar, day and night. You can see your glucose level at any time just by looking. You can also review how your glucose changes in a few hours or days to see trends. Seeing real-time glucose levels can help you make more informed decisions throughout the day about how to balance your diet, exercise, and medication.
How does a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) work?
CGM works with a small sensor implanted under your skin, usually on your abdomen or arm. The sensor measures your internal glucose level, the glucose found in the fluid between cells. The sensor checks glucose every few minutes. The transmitter sends data wirelessly to the monitor.
The monitor can be part of an insulin pump or a separate tool, which you can carry in your pocket or purse. Some CGMs send data directly to a smartphone or tablet. Several models are available with us for this purpose.
