The dehoarding continues. I feel really good about the progress today- the tools are mostly all in the same place now, in the storage room, out of the way. The main studio room is opening up nicely. Every day, stuff leaves the studio as garbage, recycling, or donation. I’m accumulating a box of usable art supplies for donation- there’s a couple of non-profit art outreach spaces in town that could make use of stuff like this.

I haven’t let any visitors down into the studio lately, because I’m feeling a bit ashamed of it, but I’ve invited someone over tuesday afternoon and I think it’ll be okay by then.

Eccentric

When I was a child I found a book at the library about Eccentrics. They were usually British, often nobility, often mentally ill (or at least mentally hilarious) and lived very strange lifestyles. Some lived in extreme austerity, some obsessively collected junk. Most were creatives:  sculpting, painting, or creating what we would now recognize as avant garde junk art. They wore strange clothes and ridiculous hats. They built their own homes from unexpected materials, or redecorated like the Mad Hatter with a Pinterest obsession. When I was young, I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up. Now as an adult, I'm more and more aware of cultural appropriation, and I find myself reaching out to my British heritage to try and find some culture that isn't stolen or colonial, and it can be difficult. But this is something I can claim, something uniquely British and worthwhile. I'm going to finally become what I wanted to be when I was little.
