oneM2M reveals why Smart Cities must become Smarter if they are to be truly valuable

According to oneM2M, a horizontal platform, which consists of a common service layer to allow every component to communicate as one system, will enable city planners to sidestep vertical deployments, which do not scale if smart cities are to expand and support multiple IoT use cases. Instead, an open horizontal platform can leverage existing networks, enable the sharing of software across different applications and allow devices with multiple uses.

Deploying a horizontal platform will also enable existing legacy IoT deployments to be incorporated into new smart city deployments through the use of adaptors, while open standards will allow city managers to mix and match vendors according to their needs, leading to greater control of total cost of ownership.

“According to the 2015 McKinsey report ‘Unlocking the potential of the Internet of Things’, interoperability will unlock 40 per cent of IoT revenue – that alone shows just how damaging launching products could be without carefully considering interoperability,” said Dr. Elloumi. “The time required to create globally harmonized standards can create frustration for many of us, but this is nothing compared to the frustration consumers and industries will experience if their newly installed IoT system requires multiple controls for multiple devices and actually complicates their lifestyle or operations rather than simplifying them.”

표준기반 사물인터넷 오픈소스 연합체, OCEAN 발족

미래창조과학부(장관 최양희)는 사물인터넷(IoT) 산업 활성화를 위해 지난 12월 16일 서울 코엑스에서 국제 표준기반 사물인터넷 오픈소스 연합체 OCEAN(Open allianCE for iot stANdard) 발족식을 개최했다.

이번 발족식에서는 사물인터넷 국제 표준을 기반으로 개발된 단말 및 서비스 플랫폼 오픈소스를 공개하였고, 이러한 표준기술을 활용한 대‧중‧소기업 간 협력을 통해 세계 시장에 진출하기 위하여 전자부품연구원 주도로 한국전력공사, SK텔레콤, LG CNS, 포스코 ICT, 네이버, 시스코, 엔텔스 등 50여개 회사들이 참여한다.

발족식을 통해 회원사들은 oneM2M 표준 기반 사물인터넷 플랫폼 오픈소스를 다운로드하여 다양한 서비스 및 플랫폼 상용화에 활용할 수 있게 됐다.…
