Hi there, I wanted to ask you a question: when you decided to study classics, what did your parents/teachers say? I'm graduating this year from high school and I would like to continue studying classics at university but everyone (even my Ancient Greek teacher!) is discouraging me from doing so... any advice? Also, do you know what kind of career possibilities are there for us classics kids (other than teaching)?
salve! I hope I didn’t leave this for a while, Tumblr doesn’t always show me I have messages, and I’ve been off and on for a while. In my parents, in many things, I am very lucky. My parents have always been very supportive of my academic pursuits. I come from a family of academics on my father’s side though, so this particular apple did not fall far from her tree. I also always was studying classics with my eye on being a high school teacher. I have wanted to be a high school Latin teacher since 7th grade…I’m a weirdo.
That said, screw everyone else, if it makes you happy do it! I guess that only works if they are not holding funds over your head. There are many career possibilities if you study Classics, beyond teaching. In fact, one of the Latin teacher groups I’m a part of just had a discussion about this. There is the purely academic route of Professorship and researcher, two of my kidlets want to be archaeologists, one of my cohort mates in the Classics BA is a museum curator person (I forgot the specifics sorry). There are a lot of classicists who become lawyers. I know some people who study the ancient languages get into cryptography. I got offered a marketing job when I was a junior because I was a Classics major and the person admired the work ethic Classics major appear to have (false front in many cases, but we’re good at pretending, lol).
That is just off the top of my very tired head. I just had parent-teacher conferences and am fried. I hope this helps! Feel free to pile on with other ideas, friends. Let me know if I can do anything else! Classics is wonderful and we would love to have you join us!
