Getting fuel from bottles on the side of the road is when you know you’re really out there. _ I particularly love this photo for the “Devil’s Breath,” the “Borrachero” (Brugmansia) flowers in the background. _ I first read about Brugmansia and its potent psychoactive effects in Wade Davis’ book, “One River” (highly recommended). _ Then when I arrived in Bogota, a conservation journalist who helped expose the illegal trade in orchids told me tales of how it is used in Colombia. _ Apparently they grind the seeds and flowers into a powder and can expose you to it simply by blowing it in your face. _ Inhaling or consuming this substance has the power to eliminate a person’s free will, turning them into a mindless zombie that can be fully controlled without any inhibitions. _ You can imagine the horror stories of people being taken advantage of in every way - walked to atms to withdraw all their funds, willingly giving up organs, etc. _ These plants and their unsuspecting, pendulous “angel’s trumpet” flowers contain scopolamine, which blocks a person’s ability to form memories and temporarily inhibits their ability to make their own free-will choices. _ Putting the flower on your pillow at night while you sleep is said to bring dreams.
