Reposted from @nycurbanism - This South Street #skyscraper is dangerously leaning three inches north! Construction on One Seaport (161 Maiden Lane) has been stalled for months, due to safety concerns from the contractor that the foundation is faulty and causing the tower to lean. The construction contractor is suing the developer, Fortis Property Group, who has been known to cut corners to save cash. The contractor claims Fortis chose not to drive support piles from the soft ground into bedrock, instead, going with a cheaper less reliable "soil improvement" method of compacting and draining the damp earth to make it more stable. The result is the super-slender luxury residential tower was leaning three inches north when it topped out at just under 700 feet, putting workers and pedestrians at risk. Fortis has an awful safety record – last year a construction worker at One Seaport fell to his death from the 29th floor. Fortis is also developing luxury housing at the former Long Island College Hospital campus, where a man died last year after entering one of their buildings undergoing a conversion. Currently, One Seaport has seventeen violations with the DOB, six of which are still open and at least one of which is class 1 (IMMEDIATELY HAZARDOUS) with civil penalties for continuing to not correct the condition (Fortis has similar violations at their other sites). While work seems to be currently halted at the leaning tower, Fortis says they plan to resume construction.
