“Teach me.” You could feel the sweat forming on the back of your neck as you eagerly waited for the witch’s response.

You were just a simple girl from the local village. You weren’t unhappy with your life. You weren’t poor or hungry, but it was boring. You were content with that, until that is, the witch came to town. She always wore a mask, so you’ve never seen her face, but she was unnaturally tall for a woman, with black hair like silk that trailed behind her. Ever since she came, you’ve held a fascination with her that was borderline romantic. But of course, you couldn’t just tell her that! The witch had a reputation for having a terrible temper. She very well may smite you where you stand if you were to confess such a thing. So instead, you set out to become her apprentice, so that you could spend more time with her. Not that she would know that.

Every day you asked to become her apprentice. Unfortunately for you though, every day she said “No.” Your shoulders sank, disappointed, but not surprised. It was the same answer every day. You took solace in the fact that you would have a reason to see her again tomorrow. But just as you were turning to go home, the witch said “Come inside. I must show you something.”

Taken aback, but unwilling to refuse such a rare opportunity, you followed the witch into her home. Once you were inside, the witch turned towards you and said “You must tell no one of what I am about to show you. If you do, I will know, and I will find you. Do you understand?” You shivered as you felt a wave of power pass through you. You nodded. “Good.” Then she did something completely unexpected. She took off her mask to reveal...

A beautiful woman. A beautiful woman with fangs, four eyes, and horns. You gasped. Before you could fully process what you saw, the witch had put her mask back on. “Now do you understand why I can’t teach you?” She asked. “I’m an oni. That’s something that can’t be taught.”

“I... understand.” You said.

“Good. Now please leave.” With that, You were back outside before you could blink. With a sigh, you walked home, not noticing the shadow watching you from the window.

It has been days since the witch(the oni?) told you her secret, and turned you away for the last time. But you still walked by her house every day. You couldn’t help it! Now that you knew what lay behind the mask, it’s as if you were even more obsessed! You knew you should stop, you just, wanted to see her one more time. So that you could tell her the truth.

“Why do you keep coming here?” You froze in your tracks. Turning, you looked up to see the witch, standing behind you on the path to her house. Before you could answer she said “You know that you have nothing to gain from me, I can’t give you power! So why do still come?”

You swallowed. Well, if there was ever a time and place, this was it. “B-Because I’m in love with you.” No reaction. At least, not one that you could see. “I’ve been in love with you ever since you moved here, I-I kept asking to become your apprentice because, I just wanted an excuse to spend time with you!” Your heart felt like it was going to pound its way out of your chest.

“You’re not lying.” The witch said softly.

“Of course not!” You said.

“You don’t even know me.”

“I can learn.”

“You don’t even know my name.”

“Then tell me.”

The witch cocked her head and slowly approached you. Taking off her mask, she studied your expression, you looked back at her, defiant. Finally she smiled and said “My name is Oba.” As she grasped your chin, and tipped your head up for a kiss, you smiled. Maybe she could teach you magic after all.
