EU Citizens! Call on the EU to Suspend Military and Trade Cooperation with Israel Today!

An official EU petition to suspend the comprehensive EU agreement with Israel over its human rights abuses has recently passed the 1 million mark required for consideration by the EU. This is a very promising development, representing the vast majority of ordinary EU citizens who want to end all complicity with Israel's abuses.
Though it has already surpassed the official threshold, the initiative is continuing to collect signatures. This is partly because there is a process of checks required to ensure every signatory is a real EU citizen, and some people who didn't fill out their details correctly may have their signatures discounted. But more than that, every signature adds more pressure on EU leaders to act.
This suspension could really happen. EU leaders are moving on this issue: only a few days ago, for example, Italy decided not to renew its bilateral military agreement with Israel. Italy was one of the countries which opposed a suspension of the EU pact with Israel last time it was attempted, in summer 2025. [1]
So how likely is this initiative to succeed? The most dangerous part of the comprehensive agreement is its military component; to suspend that part would require unanimity from all 27 member states. [2] A unanimous rejection of the military component has become more likely now that the ultra pro-Israel Orban has been ousted, but unanimity would still be difficult to achieve. Orban's successor, Magyar, has decided to rejoin the ICC, which Orban left after arrest warrants were issued for Netanyahu. [3] But he has not spoken out against abuses by Israel, saying Hungary and Israel have a 'special relationship'. [3] He also suggested Hungary would follow Germany's lead in resolutions against Israel. [3]
Suspending the trade component would be much easier, requiring only a qualified majority, meaning a certain number of EU states, representing a certain percentage of EU citizens [2]. Given that the EU is Israel's largest trading partner [2], that alone would have a real impact.
