15: last kiss

Caroline had made a decision, and that decision was to leave town. She couldn’t see herself sticking around much longer, and she was pretty sure that she’d just end up getting hurt again by someone if she stayed. She had everything stuffed into her tiny car and was driving out of town when she started to pass Matt’s house, and came to a small stop outside of it. She wasn’t sure what had compelled her to stop, but before she knew it, she’d gotten out of her car and made her way up to the front door. She knocked and waited, hands clasped behind her back as she tried to keep herself from fidgeting.

She blinked and looked up when the door opened, the familiar sight of the blue eyed boy and the sound of him saying 'Care' bringing a soft, sad smile to her face. “I’m leaving,” she blurted suddenly, and she watched as Matt’s expression changed to one more sombre and confused. “I just—I can’t stay anymore. But I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye.”

She paused, at a loss for actual words to say to him. In the silence, she wasn’t sure what came over her, but she found herself stepping forward, her arms wrapping around him as she gently pressed her lips to his.

She wasn’t sure why she had kissed him, but she had, and she lingered for a moment before pulling back, only to bury her face in the crook of his neck. “Goodbye, Matt,” she whispered softly.
