This is Ours | Liu and Fen

Faint yet golden rays peeked in between closed shutters. They lit dust in the small room in their travel to the bed, their fingers prying and prodding the outline underneath the covers till they reached the face of the man lying on his stomach. Fen held his phone close to his eyes and squinted at the time as if he could manipulate time and edge it to seven at night instead of seven in the morning. To no avail, his shift at Starbucks blaring at him as time changed to 7:01, Fen sat up with a groan, his abrupt movement shaking the light off him and sentencing the stagnant dust into a disarray of twirls and spirals intertwined by sunlight. Not bothering to make the bed, Fen strode out to the apartment’s main room.

Though the apartment was made for two people at most, what could be called the living room had blankets and pillows strewn about—the remains of several kids in the Pack. Fen made his way over the mess, kicking, grabbing, tossing anything from pillows to cellphones. Aside from them, the apartment was bare, stark, and clutching at the memory that he and Liu had only moved in two days ago after months of him legally earning his way through. It was the least he, the one who wasn’t enrolled in school, could do.

What could pass of as the kitchen was only a few feet away. He could see white strands encompassing the morning light, creating miniscule sunrays which flitted and arched according to the angled shoulders behind them. It was a sight to admire, to revere and leave undisturbed. And it was a sight that he could now experience every day.

“’morning.”

Fen fell on the couch lumped with more blankets. He raised an arm straight up, his hand open and ready for anything that would be tossed first: bread or a bottle of chocolate milk.
