ava causally and excitedly answering that question correctly while absentmindedly solving advanced math / physics problems is so 🥵 ( kind of two barrelled so feel free to parse as you please but:) in this vein, what other stuff do they pick up from each others areas of expertise, and/or habits from each other, and how does that spill out, maybe outside of their own lectures? I mean, they’re bright, love learning, probably used to study together, definitely still talk and love listening to the other— not that bea’s aiming for a physics nobel or anything like that, but i’m sure there’s a bit of two way diffusion going on. Or like, little things in teaching, influenced by the other, that only click after you find them out. Source: found out recently that two respected profs from different departments in my university were actually married, and though they never spoke about it obviously, once we found out we started seeing the signs here and there*

*(she publishes under her maiden name, so this isn’t common knowledge and I only found out after my classes with them had been completed. One of his Special Research Interests on his page/writeup is basically the closest thing you can get in his field to what she does. It’s kinda cute.)

ava is just such a smart little cookie, bea is so smitten

they definitely studied together a lot as students! bea's mental math probably got a lot better just by being with ava so often, who will ask out loud to an empty room stuff like what's 54 times 45 or what's the square root of 3000, and after some time bea just started being able to give her the answer before ava got there herself

also ava chants 'bodmas bodmas bodmas' under her breath when she's struggling through a particularly complex equation, not bc she needs it but just as muscle memory habit leftover from her younger years, and now when bea is working on a sentence that won't come out right or stuck in a reading she'll do the same even though it has nothing to do with what she does

ava will hyperfixate on whatever bea is teaching that week and it'll leak into her own classes, like when bea's archaeobotany lecture was about agricultural practices, ava internalised a good chunk of it and then took it to her own lecture and at some point her kids were all like when the hell did we start talking about rice and why have we been talking about it for fifteen minutes now

also ava tends to ramble on a lot and she'll tell her classes to get her back on track if she's gone off the deep end, bea doesn't ramble at all and is very efficient in what gets done during the lecture, but after a while they sort of met in the middle, and ava will absolutely still go off on tangents but she'll reel herself back in, and bea will maybe sometimes tell a small story about something that has to do with the lecture content before going back to it
