Rear Admiral Davis had a dilemma on her hands. A very simple, but oh so complex dilemma. She sat at her desk in her quarters, going through the files of the dead, missing, or captured. Most were nobodies - faceless names whose families would get an off white envelope and a mass produced medal commemorating the sacrifice of their loved ones.
There were two names, however, that complicated things. Complicated them quite a bit. Lieutenant Shariin Grassley, and Raylin Skylar Engelmann. The son of an Imperial manufacturing company’s CEO, and the daughter of a sitting Imperial councilman, respectively. And both were from the squadrons she had handpicked from that base on Outskirts Territory 14.
The complications arose in the simple question of, how does one tell a councilmen that what used to be his daughter was killed in action? Without attracting scorn to oneself, of course. And the same goes for Grassley. How do you tell the owner and CEO of one of your most important companies that his son was slaughtered in an ambush?
Leyna would stare at the two personnel files of the fallen pilots that she had placed on her desk. Grassley’s was fine, it had all the accurate information, and she can probably invoke some good old national pride by saying that he died defending his subordinates - albeit skipping over the fact that only one of those subordinates managed to evacuate without being shredded limb from limb by a deranged Harpy.
The councilman’s daughter, however, would need some modifications to have that same heroic backstory. After all, the council and public didn’t need to hear about a tool, they needed to be inspired by the tale of a girl who died far too young by brutal rebel hands. Of course, the first modification to make was declaring her killed in action, rather than captured. And the second, was to just change some.. Arbitrary details.
After all, Sergeant Raylin “Flex” Engelmann had a much more charming ring to it than a kennel number and the callsign “Foxglove”.
