So this was what it was like on the other end.
Not that this was the first time Henry had been left on read and certainly not by Lara. He’d have assumed Lara had gotten busy, had better things to do, people to talk to. Perhaps fell asleep in a different context. Any of them save the last could still be plausible, and in any of those scenarios, he would have waited for her. He’d always wait for her.
Except, things weren’t like they were back then. There was no assurance, no knowing when Henry would get to see her next, or where, or for how long. He’d have thought he’d learn his lesson the last time he almost lost her. It wasn’t the right time, he had convinced himself. But when had time ever done him any favors?
A block had proven challenging, Henry would admit, when parties like these tended to be contained within the four walls of whatever establishment it was taking place in. But it wasn’t his first rodeo, and he wouldn’t have lasted this long in his line of work if he wasn’t good at it. Henry would have found her sooner had he spent less time bumping into people sending their regards, some by people he was familiar with, some complete strangers. The latter, surprisingly were harder to shake off.
“Something tells me you’re still not over the last time I didn’t reply.”
