this colorspread is so endearing… sanuso colorspread of all time. fun fashion also—i really like sanji’s shoes and nami’s minidress. and zoro is wearing a Fun Jacket, which is a bit of a theme with him in colorspreads (oda likes putting him in detailed jackets, just as he enjoys putting sanji in patterned shirts. zoro does, in fact, have a running theme across his fashion — he’s an outerwear guy.)
also, is nami missing her signature tattoo here?
it’s interesting that crocodile seems to be pretty personally invested in the well-being of whisky peak. he evidently cares enough about their food situation to dispatch two pretty high-ranking agents to secure whale meat for them. i wonder if whisky peak was founded as a company town or if it existed as a bounty hunting hotspot even before baroque works.
now i’m imagining a baroque works ad like: join baroque works! benefits include: a cute town to live in and company food.
one piece excels at setting the mood of a scene through environmental cues and factors, and sometimes it’s incredibly unsubtle about it. take a shot every time the moon is shown in the next few chapters of whisky peak... this panel quite literally points to it and begs the reader to notice it.
i’m not really invested in celestial body symbolism for characters, it’s just not my thing, but whisky peak is good material for zoro moon symbolism truthers. zoro inverts what igaram sees as the power dynamic between baroque works and the strawhats. you’d think that moonlight would belong to baroque works — the organization of secrets, code names, bounty hunters working by night. well, jokes on them, zoro knows how to play their game and he’s better at it, without even trying. and to really drive that point home, he gets silhouetted by the moon multiple times.
it’s so fun when he’s evil.
this is a beautifully done reveal with a very cinematic zoom-in. one piece excels at moments like these — creating shots that read like an anime or movie scene.
however, i can’t help but imagine a funny alternate scenario: what if most these tombstones were just for cactus island residents who died ordinary, unremarkable deaths? i mean, they have to be buried somewhere, right?
it’s whisky PEAK time!!!!
the bottom panel is beautiful, and it’s angle and composition really sell the idea that zoro is the one with the upper hand in this situation. oda’s ability to just pull out crowd shots regularly like this is incredibly impressive — i say this as a manga artist who has drawn crowd shots before. look at all the unique designs! i also noticed igaram, vivi, miss monday, and mr. 9 in the crowd, as well as two nuns.
i also love the reflection of the moon in the water. as i mentioned in the previous post, the moon is a running visual theme in whisky peak. this is a town built on murder and secrecy — work done by the light of the moon. unfortunately for the bounty hunters, zoro is very good at murder, so the moon flips sides and joins him because it can tell he’s the winning team. the panel can’t show zoro silhouetted by the moon since he has his back to us, but it doesn’t want us to forget about its presence.
oh nooo we can’t have people saying “hell” in our manga full of blood and violence oh noooooo
