THE HISTORY OF GABRIEL
Gabriel Alonto had always been the rebellious son, the golden child of the family, a charismatic figure who seemed to live with ease in the spotlight, although bogged down by the weight of his father's expectations. He was the one everyone admired—the one who could charm anyone, who had the perfect combination of talent and looks to succeed in any realm he chose.
Growing up, Malia looked up to Gabriel, not only because of his charm but because he was everything she was expected to be—confident, popular, and effortlessly brilliant. She often felt like the quieter, less noticed sibling, even though she had her own ambitions.
Gabriel has always had a magnetic presence, admired by the public. However, those closest to him knew there was more to his character than meets the eye. Malia, despite their close relationship, was unaware of some of the darker parts of his life in the beginning.
Years before the murder scandal that rocked their family's world, Gabriel had been involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of a young woman named Elise Rivera. Elise was an aspiring artist with connections to a rival family in the real estate business, and the accident occurred under suspicious circumstances. Gabriel was behind the wheel, but his family quickly moved to cover up the incident, paying off Elise’s family to avoid public scandal. The official story was that Elise had been intoxicated and that it was a tragic accident.
However, there were rumors that Gabriel had been driving recklessly, possibly under the influence, and that the death had been more than just an accident. Despite the Alontos’ best efforts to suppress the truth, whispers about the incident persisted, with some believing that the family had bought Elise’s silence. What Malia didn’t know, until much later, was that Gabriel had never fully recovered from the guilt over her death. The trauma from that night, coupled with his increasing substance abuse, had driven him to act out even more recklessly, which played a significant role in his unraveling during the Clara Lancaster affair (more on that through personal plotting as to not spoil dirty secrets!)
The family’s history of cover-ups, combined with Gabriel’s spiral into self-destruction, painted a grim picture of what had been festering beneath the Alonto name for decades.
Although Malia was academically gifted and a natural communicator, it seemed her talents always played second fiddle to Gabriel’s larger-than-life persona.
The Alontos were always putting on a façade for the outside world, but the truth was that their household was often cold, with little emotional warmth to soften the edges of their otherwise glamorous life. The walls of their sprawling estate were full of secrets—secrets about the family’s past, about business dealings that could never be discussed in public, and about relationships that were often more about appearances than real love.
Gabriel’s reckless behaviors, which would later lead to the scandal that tore their family apart for good, had their roots even in early years. Malia had watched as Gabriel, desperate for attention, pushed boundaries in ways that hinted at deeper emotional issues growing up. His substance abuse, the parties, the impulsive behavior—it was all an attempt to escape the suffocating weight of their family’s expectations. But Malia, who was always more introspective, couldn’t help but feel both sympathy and frustration toward him.
She understood, on some level, why he acted out, but she also resented his ability to garner so much attention and affection without ever having to confront his flaws.
Malia’s relationship with her brother, Gabriel, is undoubtedly complex. Before the scandal, Malia and Gabriel had a turbulent yet affectionate bond. She had always tried to protect him, even when she knew he wasn’t the ideal son or brother. Gabriel was charming, impulsive, and reckless—traits that often got him into trouble—but to Malia, he was family. Even after everything he did, Malia’s feelings toward him are marked by both loyalty and guilt.
