Buzzfeed @ OPENCo NY
This event recap is written by FM Content Strategist Beth Ethridge.
Buzzfeed's OPENCo event last week brought the brand’s LOL-centric company culture and secret social media sauce to the forefront. Buzzfeed’s success can be boiled down to a study of human psychology — always recognize that users consume different information through different methods in order to fill different needs.
On the social web: It's not about the information you are sharing, but how what you are sharing helps people connect. For example, you may not look at pictures of puppies during your free time, but you'll post a cute picture to your social network(s).
Content is about identity: When you share content on Facebook, you're telling people about yourself by showing them what you relate to (an article on being excessively tall or you secret love of The O.C., cute animal pictures — it's about being human and relatable)
On search engines: This is a direct path to information: "it's what you're interested in when no one is looking."
Key Takeaway: Ultimately, sharing content is about identity — and how it connects you to others is the underlying goal.
