There appears to be complementary openness trends - towards government and business transparency and towards open systems and open source.
This can be particularly empowering because transparency can enable participation and leverage the network effects of information. And, open systems and open source enables innovation without the high costs associated with developing proprietary middleware or integration. The combination of the two in the "2.0" era has much promise.
These slides are from a few years ago. We're now seeing the impact of cloud computing on the ability to scale innovation and analytics.
