Mini rant about operatic roles in ALW
Would you believe that the only two roles that actually needs opera training singers in the musical POTO by Webber are Carlotta and Piangi?
And ERIK doesn’t have to be one... E-R-I-K.
He must be such a Vibrato master operatic bass-baritone in Leroux (with a possibly tenor range) that he should be able to break f-ing windows by a note! I know he has high notes, but it is not about high notes. His voice in Leroux is implied to be something deeper anyway, so it is rather the incredible power, range and hypnotic effect of his voice that counts over high A flats. He has to be someone who only says "You..." on a threatening tone and you feel the building just collapsed on your head. No wonder even the Daroga is afraid of him.
So, I’d imagine it is exactly him who’d need to be opera quality over Piangi. :)
