Review #92: L’Elisir d’Amore at Opera Zuid
16 July 2021, recording from 23 May 2021
A wonderful chamber opera with 5 singers on staged and a perfect musical arrangement by Pedro Beriso that made the orchestra feel as full and dynamic as a full-sized one.
The story is transported to the modern world, with the main characters turned into school kids at a frat party gone slightly overboard. The adorable Nemorino, played by José Romero (who has an eerie similarity to Darren Criss in A Very Potter Senior Year), is hopelessly infatuated with Adina (played by talented Julietta Aleksanyan), is tricked into snorting flour, believing it will give him the powers to win Adina's love. Shenanigans ensue.
I absolutely adored it. The energy of the actors was electric and transmitted through the screen. What a wonderful arrangement of both story, music, and comedy. People will always be fools in love.
Tell me you also see the resemblance. It's not just the hair and the school uniform, right?
