Talking to "Non"-Readers and Realizing Unpleasant Realities of Book-World Snobbery.
There’s something refreshing about talking to people about reading and books when they are not in any way connected to the academic or literary community.
Deny it all you want, but there’s so much snobbery in the general literary circles that it’s sometimes hard to have a lighthearted conversation before someone starts yelling about how wrong it is to highlight books, about how YA is stupid, evil of e-books, or how literature is dead, and the internet ruined the literary world. And while I’m always ready for a healthy debate, the older I get (especially in internet age) the less I want to deal with it, which is why it’s so great to talk to people who are … unspoiled by all that nonsense.
